Acoustic Enclosure has come into existence due to the rise in the use of large equipments like turbines, Diesel generator sets, gas compression sets, transformers and others we are also seeing a rise in noise levels accompanying with it. Many of these equipments operate at very high noise levels which are not only uncomfortable for ears but can also damage ears. How can we counteract such high noise levels? How can we ensure the safety of the people working around and others in the vicinity of the equipments? There is a way.

Acoustic Enclosure.

They are specifically designed Acoustical Solution to help control noise pollution by muffling high noise levels generated from large equipments like DG Sets.
Before we can get to know the working of Acoustic enclosures better, we need a better understanding of noise, the different levels of noise, noise measurement to make a better decision on the purchase of a noise control system like acoustic enclosure.
Noise levels and measurement
The sound is what we hear, which is seen as a mechanical wave resulting from the particle vibration in the medium as the wave moves through the medium. The level of sound is measured in DB scale.
Generator noise can be seen as coming from 2 sources:
Mechanical noise coming from the mechanical vibration of the different moving parts and components of the machine. Smaller engines with lesser cylinders produce more noise and vibration for their size. Combustion noise coming from the engine. These could include Exhaust noise, cooling fan noise, Induction noise and alternator noise coming from the engine due to the combustion process.
Working of Acoustic Generators
Acoustic Enclosures are acoustic chambers that minimize or attenuate noise coming out of the large equipments. These are designed to muffle noise to acceptable sound(decibel) levels. The acoustic material used for enclosures perform the functions of sound insulation and absorption.

Benefits of using Acoustic Enclosures

  • Noise reduction can improve employees productivity
  • Custom noise reduction- Enclosures can be designed to provide the desired level of sound to maintain a good working environment.
  • The modular construction of acoustic enclosures makes it easy to install
  • Helps adhere to government regulations related to noise control.
  • Low maintenance – Although the enclosures may be big, the maintenance required is minimal due to the nonmoving parts of the enclosure.

The different materials used in Acoustic enclosures:

  • Insulation/Acoustic Insulation – Sound absorbing insulation is used in the interiors to absorb sound and prevent them from going outside.
  • Acoustic Barriers / Panels – Steel panels are used to enclose the equipment for engineering acoustic performance
  • Acoustic louvres and attenuators – These are used to allow airflow while providing various degrees of noise attenuation. Attenuators are designed to reduce noise traveling along the air path.
  • Isolation mounts/pads – To prevent sound waves to travel through air and land, enclosures are mounted on concrete pads or insulators.
  • Weatherproof enclosures – Is extremely durable and can be used in extreme weather condition during summers, rainy seasons and winters.
  • Acoustic doors – For manual entry into the enclosures(custom designed) for easy maintenance of the equipments. The Heavy Machines Acoustic Enclosures are manufactured with an outer steel shell. The walls of the enclosure are insulated with the fireproof acoustic material. Each enclosure comes with panel viewing window and side doors. Attenuators are designed and tested to meet performance criteria. An attenuator is a device which allows large amounts of air to pass through it but limits the transmission of noise. Air is forced between splitters (perforated sheet metal with high-density Rockwall infill) which absorbs the sound and reduces the wavelength. These allow them to work even under the harshest ambient conditions whilst maintaining specified noise levels without loss of power.
